What are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers do more than act as spackle filling the trenches that make up your wrinkles.
Instead, suspended in the fillers biocompatible matrix lies powerful hyaluronic and polylactic acids. Both of these acids appear naturally throughout the body and are responsible for stimulating the body’s natural collagen production. Most likely, you’ve heard commercials about products containing collagen, the protein that makes up the scaffolding of the skin.
Collagen is something of a fountain of youth because, due do its molecular structure, it attracts water molecules to it, plumping the area. More, it provides support to the skin. In other words, hyaluronic acid promotes new skin growth, and that new skin attracts and locks in moisture. Pretty nifty.

Are dermal filler injections painful?

During a typical filler appointment, you’ll receive several quick injections delivered using a small, fine needle. Most fillers contain lidocaine, a topical anesthetic, in their formulations to reduce discomfort. We can ice the area or apply a topical anesthetic to further increase your comfort if desired.
What is the downtime?
There is no downtime involved with dermal fillers. This means you can resume most of your activities right after receiving your facial fillers. However, you may need to avoid physically strenuous activities that may speed up your blood flow and contribute to swelling or bruising. Are dermal fillers safe?
Dermal fillers are made from naturally occurring substances and have a high safety profile. They are also approved by the FDA for uses such as the treatment of facial wrinkles and folds, the reduction of acne scars, and the augmentation of facial features such as lips, chin, and cheeks. Dermal fillers are known for causing minimal side effects and remain virtually painless for patients.
Can you get dermal fillers during pregnancy?
Dermal fillers are not recommended for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you received dermal fillers before your pregnancy, you can schedule your maintenance treatments after your delivery.
What’s the Difference Between Fillers and Botox®?
If you were paying attention to the list of fillers we offer, you might have wondered why we didn’t mention Botox. That’s because, while it is an injectable anti-aging product, it is not a dermal filler. Botox Cosmetic and similar products such as Xeomin® and Dysport® work differently from fillers. Instead of adding volume and erasing wrinkles, they are FDA-approved to temporarily block the nerve signals that tell your muscles to contract. Another way in which they differ from fillers is that they work best in the upper third of the face, around the eyes and eyebrow area.
Neuromodulators like Botox are best for helping diminish the wrinkles that form from repetitive expressions like squinting, frowning, and smiling. Brow furrows, crow’s feet, and the “eleven lines” between the eyebrows all become less prominent with the use of these products. The effects last three to four months for most people, and you can maintain your results with periodic maintenance appointments.
How can you tell if you need Botox? One rule of thumb is that Botox and other neuromodulators are for dynamic wrinkles that become more pronounced when you make specific facial expressions. On the other hand, static wrinkles that result from a loss of skin elasticity are more appropriate to address with fillers. These kinds of lines remain visible even when your face is at rest.
